Years passedflavored seltzer burst onto the moisturizing scene, and now it's easier than ever to find it all in just about any flavor you can imagine. Most of us find it easier to drink enough water each day when the water is sparkling and tastes like itCherry blossom, Lublimoncello, Lubwatermelon.
But despite the fact that flavored seltzer has no calories, sugar or artificial sweeteners, experts say it's not an exact substitute for plain old water. We're not trying to ring any mega alarm bells - go ahead and sip this cangrapefruitno guilt! But if you see seltzer as a permanent replacement for water, it's probably time to rethink how you drink it. Here's what experts have to say about the effects of flavored seltzer on the body.
Can Seltzer irritate the bladder and kidneys?
A few months ago, pelvic floor physical therapist Alicia Jeffrey-Thomas, DPT, toldposted a video on TikTokabout how seltzer irritates the bladder (meaning it can make you urinate more often), along with other beverages like coffee, tea, and alcohol. As you can imagine, people freaked out at the thought that their beloved seltzer could do any harm.
Fortunately, urologists — doctors who specialize in the genitourinary tract, which includes the kidneys, bladder, adrenal glands, urethra and male reproductive organs — say there's nothing to worry about with seltzer water and bladder irritation unless he already has a sensitive or overactive bladder .Damon and Davis, MD, a urologist at The Urology Specialists of Maryland at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland, says that in healthy people, seltzer water will not affect these organs any differently than plain water.

The same goes for your kidneys. "Seltzer water doesn't have any particular effect on the kidneys compared to still water," she saysGregory'ego Quayle'a, chief physician, urologist and advisory board member forPhoenix, a Canadian men's health website. It's true that carbonated drinks like cola can negatively affect your kidneys, but it's not because of the bubbles. "Coke has been shown to lead to changes in urine and kidney stones due to phosphoric acid, not carbonic acid," says Quayle.
Technically, you can overdo it by drinking too much seltzer (or plain water). This is very rare in people with healthy kidneys, says Quayle, because the kidneys do a great job of removing excess fluid. However, if you have a medical condition that reduces your body's ability to excrete water or causes your body to retain water, overhydration is a greater risk. "Overhydration is a common problem among people with kidney problems, liver disease, or premature babies whose kidneys are still developing," says Quayle.
Again, the risk of overhydration is no greater with seltzer than with plain water, and it's not something most people need to worry about. But if your pee is crystal clear all the time, that's an early sign that you're drinking too much water, including seltzer, says Quayle.
How Does Seltzer Affect Digestion?
When it comes to your intuition, a seltzer can be helpful. "Sparkling water has the potential to help with indigestion (digestive problems including pain, bloating, and nausea in the upper abdomen) and constipation," says Laura Manning, MPH, RD, director of health andSusan and Leonard Feinstein IBD Clinical Center at Mount Sinai Hospitalin New York. It comes from A2002 surveypublished inEuropean Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology- Not much research has been done on the subject since then. "[This] may be related to the fact that carbon dioxide helps move the contents of the stomach and colon faster," says Manning. "Carbonation can also help stimulate stomach acid to help increase digestion of food in the stomach."
That said, there is definitely such a thing as too much seltzer. "High consumption of seltzer in a short period of time can cause stomach problems or bloating and can weaken the valve that normally keeps stomach contents low," says Manning. This can worsen gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) because carbonation can cause belching, which can cause acid reflux and heartburn, Manning says.
If you've been diagnosed with GERD or experience heartburn regularly, you may want to cut back on seltzer (and other sodas) to see if that helps. And if you're drinking so much that you're constantly bloated and burping, it's time to cut back.
Does seltzer damage teeth?
Although seltzer does not contain sugar - the main villain when it comes to teeth - some dentists believe that it is worth limiting consumption.
Again, because seltzer is carbonated, it is slightly more acidic than plain water. Pure water is neutral with a pH of 7,mineral water lands somewhere between 5 and 6,unflavored sparkling water such as San Pellegrino and Perrier is around 5.25, iflavored seltzers like Bubbly and LaCroix generally range from 3.8 to 4.8 depending on flavor. This means that seltzer is much less acidic than most other drinks -koks ma pH 2,6-2,7,Sprite is about 3.3Iorange juice is about 3.5.
"In general, charring alone doesn't seem to harm the teeth, it's the added ingredients that can contribute to tooth demineralization," she says.Dr. Alex Rubinov, DDS, a cosmetic dentist based in New York City. Flavored seltzers sometimes have ingredients added that are acidic, meaning they are more likely to cause tooth erosion than unflavored seltzer or plain water. But Rubinov says it's fine to drink them in moderation: "My rule of thumb is that one can a day with meals and wash everything down with plain plain water at the end of the meal." And if you drink seltzer outside of meals, she still recommends rinsing your mouth with plain water, which can wash away the residual acid.

Can You Drink Too Much Seltzer?
The fact is that drinking seltzer water will not have a huge negative impact on your overall health. Doctors don't worry about the slight acidity of seltzer water affecting your organs, and if you're not peeing constantly or noticing signs of overhydration, they say there's no reason to limit.
But when it comes to dental health, seltzer's mild acidity can add up over time. Rubinov recommends sticking to no more than one can of seltzer a day and drinking it with a meal and some plain water to prevent acid from sticking to the teeth. But if you take good care of your oral hygiene in general - brush and floss regularly and get a professional cleaning as recommended by your dentist - an extra can here and there probably won't hurt.
